Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
